The Senate Finance Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions
and Family Policy, Chaired by Senator John Kerry (D-MA) will hold
a hearing on the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall
Elimination Provision (WEP) on Tuesday, November
6, 2007. The purpose of the hearing is
to review current Social Security policies that affect government
workers and retirees who participate in a pension system where Social Security
taxes are not paid, as well as those workers and retirees who
also worked in Social Security covered employment or have spouses
who did.
NAPO is attending the hearing to ensure
that Chairman Kerry and the Subcommittee fully recognize how the
GPO and WEP adversely affect law enforcement officers and their
families. NAPO has acquired permission to send in written submissions to
the Subcommittee for the record.
We would like to include in our submission package letters
and statements from you, our members, telling
lawmakers just how the GPO and WEP have affected your retirement.
Your statement must be single-spaced, not exceeding
10 pages in length. The first page must clearly state your full
name and address as well as the title and date of the hearing
("GPO and WEP: Policies Affecting Pensions from Work Not
Covered by Social Security" November 6, 2007).
Please email (amournighan@napo.org) or fax (703- 684-0515) your statements and letters
to Andy Mournighan, NAPO’s Government Affairs Director,
by November 19, 2007.
NAPO will hand deliver the submission package,
including all of your individual statements, to the Subcommittee
on November 20, 2007, the last day the Subcommittee will accept statements. In submitting a story for the record, please:
·
Follow exactly all the
submission standards as outlined above.
·
Be clear and concise in
your message.
·
Tell your story and urge
Congress to repeal the GPO and WEP.
Below
are talking points that can be used along with your personal anecdotes. NAPO will post a summary of the hearing and any updates on our
website, www.napo.org.
