Statement of NAPO President Mick McHale on the Tyre Nichols Case in Memphis, TN

Alexandria, VA – Every individual in this nation has the right to due process, as do these officers, but there must be transparency and accountability for how such actions occurred. From the footage of the incident, we condemn in every possible terms the actions of the officers without a reasonable belief of danger to themselves or others. While video footage is beneficial for ascertaining what happened, the officers deserve the chance to defend their actions. However, without a clear threat to themselves or others, these actions are not those of the brave men and women who serve and protect our communities every day.

Law enforcement is entrusted to protect and serve the citizens of our community, which is an honor we take seriously, and without that trust we cannot effectively do our job. We stand by those officers who abide by the ethos and creed to protect and defend.
